The first Bahamas Bonefish Conference will be held in Nassau at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort this October. This conference is being organized and sponsored by the Bahamian Flats Fishing Alliance (BFFA, a partnership between the Fisheries Conservation Foundation, The Bahamas National Trust and the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust).
There is no registration fee. Participants will be on their own for meals, but there are facilities for meals and coffee adjacent to the meeting room. For those who wish to stay overnight, reservations should be made directly with the Sheraton at (866)716-8106. Be sure to mention you're booking your room for conference attendance to receive our special pricing discount of $129.00 per night.
The first day of the Conference, Monday, October 4, 2010, will be open to the public. Activities will start at 9:00 AM and conclude at 4:30 PM. The day will consist of a series of sessions in which scientists will present their latest findings on a variety of topics (e.g., behavior and movements, best handling practices for catch-and-release, reproductive ecology, habitat usage, age and growth, etc.). During these sessions, anglers, guides and scientists will discuss a variety of issues related to all aspects of bonefish and angling. This day of the conference should be a very interactive and interesting — one where everyone can learn some new things! Anyone and everyone interested in bonefishing should plan to attend this event.
The second day, Tuesday, October 5, 2010, will be restricted to guides and lodge owners. This day will consist of working sessions, facilitated by members of the BFFA, in which the group discusses the potential formation of a grassroots coalition among guides and lodge owners across The Bahamas designed to promote long-term conservation of the flats fishery and the coastal habitats upon which it depends. This session is tentatively scheduled to run from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM to allow participants time to get to the airport for return flights. We urge all guides and lodge owners from all around The Bahamas to attend this session; this effort should prove to be of tremendous benefit to all aspects of bonefishing in The Bahamas, serving as a model for the rest of the world on how to positively affect flats resources.
